Ecodesign Award for students

The OVAM Ecodesign Awards 2017 for students were presented during the "Week van het Ontwerpen" on 20 October 2017 in the Budafabriek in Kortrijk. With this prize, the OVAM rewards the best projects from student designers with an eye for sustainability. This year's edition was marked by a record number of entries. It was also striking that the new generation of designers wants to solve socially relevant problems while attaching great importance to sustainability.

Each year the OVAM challenges students to design a product that changes the world. The stake? A cash prize of 1,000 euros and individual guidance by Flanders DC, the ultimate point of contact for the creative sector. A jury of experts and professionals awarded prizes in the 'thesis' and 'year's work' categories. There is also a public award.

Young designers play a big part in the future of ecodesign. With the Ecodesign Award, we want to offer students encouragement and support. We also want to inspire young designers to bear sustainable product innovation in mind later in their professional careers.

Each year a hundred thousand tons of fish die as by-catch worldwide. Zero Discards increases the chances of survival of these fish and is also more cost-effective than traditional fishing. 

"By-catch" refers to fish inadvertently caught in nets during 'commercial' fishing. Because their market value is not high enough, they are thrown back into sea, often injured or even dead.

Zero Discards optimises the fish catch in an animal-friendly way. To start, the fishing nets are brought in underwater and horizontally. Then the fish are not exposed to the immense pressure of their own weight. A tilting gate with grid structure takes the fish to the first pre-sorting process. Fish smaller than the grid structure can then escape. A "fish-friendly" pump then draws the other fish towards the sorting process. Sorting takes place using cameras that determine if a fish is a preferred catch or undesired by-catch. The by-catch then swims along a natural and ergonomic route back into the sea. Each fish is out of the water for a maximum of one minute. With traditional fishing that can be as long as ten minutes. The Zero Discards system also processes 1,000 fish a minute as opposed to 150 with traditional fishing.

Today much oxygen is lost in the oxygen supplies in hospitals. O2NOME makes a hospital self-sufficient in mobile oxygen supplies and optimises the associated logistics. 

O2NOME maakt gebruik van de Oxypoint technologie waarbij de zuurstofbedeling discontinu gebeurt en waardoor de zuurstofflessen tot 80% langer meegaan. Deze technologie wordt door de patiënt bovendien als meer comfortabel dan een continue aanvoer van zuurstof ervaren. Hospitals currently work, on the one hand, with a stationary network for oxygen supply and, on the other, with a system with mobile oxygen bottles that are refilled elsewhere. The latter oxygen bottles often still contain a residual pressure that is lost on refilling. O2NOME offers hospitals the opportunity to refill oxygen bottles on-site through their stationary network so no oxygen is lost.

O2NOME consists of intelligent oxygen bottles, intermediate units and a filling installation. Data communication takes place between these three appliances. Coordinated software constantly measures how much oxygen is present and where.
The O2NOME mobile oxygen bottles have a polycarbonate housing and a ceramic coating. The choice of material makes the bottles small and light. This only offers advantages. The smaller bottles can hold a higher internal pressure of up to 300 bar. The bottles only weigh 2.5 kg instead of 6.5 kg, something that obviously increases user-friendliness.

O2NOME uses Oxypoint technology where the oxygen supply is discontinuous so the oxygen bottles last up to 80% longer. This technology is also more comfortable for the patient than a continuous oxygen supply.

In our Flemish cities, every five kilograms of residual waste contains no less than one kilogram of vegetable, fruit and garden waste. This means that each Fleming produces 20 kg of vegetable, fruit and garden waste per year. People often find vegetable, fruit and garden waste unpleasant because of its odour and appearance and the fruit flies it attracts. This means they prefer to throw it in the residual waste instead of keeping it separate for a longer time. 

Kubis is an innovative container for the storage of vegetable, fruit and garden waste in the kitchen. The design integrates the existing Biobags which are compostable waste bags. The ingenious buffer principle shields the user from the waste. Two clips pinch the bag shut when the container is open, so the content is never visible and does not give off a smell. These clips are operated by a guide triangle in the upper compartment.

The user activates the whole mechanism with a simple press on the button. All actions with the container are obvious and simple so there can be no doubt about what one has to do. The user-friendliness of the container means there is no longer any reason not to keep vegetable, fruit and garden waste separate.

There is no getting around it: festivals – however enjoyable – have a real impact on the environment. Each year festival-goers leave tons of waste behind on festival camp sites. Recamp tries to offer a remedy here in lending out camping material. 

The festival visitor collects the camping material from a stand on the festival camp site. He pays a deposit and rental fee. He does have to erect and take the tent down himself as that is not (yet) included in the service. After the festival he returns the material undamaged and gets his deposit back. No more dragging camping material around thanks to Recamp.

The collection includes a tent and a chair. Everything is made of polypropylene plating. The tent consists of different parts that can be easily replaced in the case of damage. Recamp can also be fully personalised. Festivals can choose their own look 'n' feel on the camping material.

Offering Recamp as a service means the parts stay in the possession of the producer and parts to be replaced are then recycled. The circle is then complete.

Biekes van A_tekst

The bee population has fallen dramatically in recent years. Biekes van A is seeking support to tackle the bee shortage in the city. 

Biekes van A consists of a sensor in the form of a leaf that measures the presence of bees in your garden, a receiver for in the home and an app. The sensor registers how long bees stay on the flowers and sends this information to the internet. The "Bieke" receiver signals when a bee is flying around your flowers. The app collects all the information in a clear way and also allows you to compare your garden or planter with others in the vicinity. The app also provides more information about bee- and insect-friendly flowers and how to care for these flowers.

Biekes van A particularly wants to raise awareness of the problematic situation of the bee. With this product/service combination you as an urban resident can also help keep the bee population up to scratch.

Fishionable_tekst

Fish skin does not immediately get the juices flowing. But it can be processed to become an odourless, non-tearing, wear-resistant, waterproof, transparent and 100% natural material: Fishionable. Fish is a practically inexhaustible source of raw material. The "inventor" of Fishionable indeed calculated that some 1,600 kg of material can be produced each day. 

The fish skin first has the scales removed before being soaked in a tan bath for twenty-four hours. The tan bath consists of a combination of fat and oil. The skins are then dried. The drying process takes place in the shape in which one wants the hardened fish gelatine. Afterwards the skins are too tough and too hard to be sewn, for example.

Return is a biodegradable urn made of rose petals. Return intelligently combines a waste problem with a social issue. The number of cremations is increasing year after year, but sprinkling ashes at sea is no longer permitted. At the same time very many flowers including roses are lost at auction depots each day. 

Return brings both aspects together in an original manner with an urn made of rose petals. The urn is completely biodegradable and may be thrown into the sea.

The rose petals are plucked, dried and mixed with gelatine, wheat flour and vinegar. The material shrinks a little during the drying process. Then the different parts of the urn can be cut out and attached to each other with a biodegradable adhesive that consists of gelatine, water, vinegar and pulp from the rose material.

Drop is an interactive and innovative toothbrush that teaches children to brush their teeth on their own. 

Drop wants to make cleaning teeth fun for children. This is often no easy task, especially getting them to brush for long enough. The Drop handle fully changes colour after two minutes of brushing. Then children see when they have brushed their teeth for long enough in a fun and original way. Drop goes back to the essence - brushing properly and long enough – and uses no electronics.

The brush heads are simple to replace and the working life of the toothbrush handle is 10 years. Then nothing lands unnecessarily in the rubbish.

First Prize includes a course of coaching from Flanders DC. In this coaching programme, Flanders DC works together with you to create and elaborate a step-by-step plan customised to your thesis project and to help you bring it to the market. Within a 6-month period, you receive 3 to 6 individual coaching sessions (a total of 8 hours). You may choose to use your prize money (1,000 euros) for this coaching programme and then you will be brought into contact with external advisers who can continue to help you (up to a value of 1,000 euros).
